The superstitions surrounding the celebration of a marriage have the most diverse origins and foundations, these are some of them, although each one is only followed in some parts of the world.

Popular Beliefs Something old, something new, something borrowed or used and something blue. In the superstitious Middle Ages it was said that at a wedding it was good luck to wear:

- Something old, that symbolized the bride's connection with her past and represented the continuity of her marriage (it used to be some family jewel).

- Something borrowed, which referred to the belief that happiness could be attracted by using something from a friend who was happy. What was lent symbolized friendship, obtaining happiness on loan (it used to be a jewel or simply a handkerchief)

- Something new, because it produced hope for an optimal future.

- Something blue, since that color represented the fidelity of the bride and groom (it used to be the garter on the bride's leg; in the United States the blue lace garter was considered a symbol of virginity). In superstitious peoples of the Middle Ages (and also in the current English royal family), although the couple already lived together, the night before the wedding each had to spend at their home or at their respective parents' home.
