The Punisher is a vigilante and fictional antihero from the Marvel Comics universe, created in 1974, as the antagonist and rival of Spider-Man, by screenwriter Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru, their first appearance was in The Amazing SpiderMan. Although he is sometimes considered a hero, he is a savage and ruthless vigilante who considers killing, kidnapping, extortion, threats and torture as acceptable crime-fighting tactics. After the death of his wife and children, murdered by the mafia when they witnessed an execution of gangsters in Central Park (New York City), Castle undertakes a personal war against criminals, using all kinds of tactics and weapons.
