The Old Tercio of Naples was born in the mid-16th century under the orders of Charles I of Spain and V of Germany. It was a third assigned to the campaigns that the Spanish kingdom maintained in the Italian peninsula, although this does not mean that this Third had to go fight in the Flanders campaign. This Tercio along with that of Sicily and Lombardia are considered the oldest Tercios.
