The penny (Penny in singular, and pence in plural) is a monetary exchange value used in the United Kingdom; worth one hundredth of a pound sterling. Before 1971, its value was 1/240th of a pound sterling, and it weighed one pennyweight. A penny was one twelfth of a shilling. Amounts less than £1 sterling or Irish pound are suffixed with a p, as in 2p 5p, 26p, 72p. Before 1972, amounts less than £1 were suffixed with a d, derived from the term denarius. There were exchange values lower than the penny such as halfpence and quarterpence, called farthings.
