The montera is the traditional hat of bullfighters, both the sword and the banderilleros. It has been used since the 19th century, replacing the bicorn hat of sheriffs and other officers authorized to execute deaths.   It was introduced to bullfighting clothing in 1835 by the bullfighter Paquiro, who made various modifications to the costume of lights.   The montera is usually made of astrakhan with an inner cover of taffeta.
