Martial arts, also called fighting systems, consist of codified practices and traditions whose objective is to subdue or defend oneself through technique. There are various styles and schools of martial arts that usually exclude the use of firearms and other modern weaponry. What differentiates martial arts from mere bellicosity with physical violence (street fighting) is the organization of its techniques into a coherent system and the codification of effective methods. Furthermore, since the strict meaning is military arts, by extension it applies to all types of hand-to-hand fighting and historical military arts.
