Krtek the Mole (in Czech called Krtek, or Krteček, Talpa; in Slovak Krtko; in German der Maulwurf; in Hungarian Kisvakond) is an animated character in an animated series. It first appeared in 1956 in Prague, when Miler wanted to create an animated character about the linen process. Miler wanted to choose an animal for the lead role, influenced by Walt Disney, and decided to take a mole after stumbling upon a mole burrow during a walk. The first film, called Jak krtek ke kalhotkám přišel (How the Mole Got Pants) was released in 1956, and the affectionate main character gained enormous popularity in many Eastern European countries, and also in Germany, Austria, India and China.
