The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a medium-heavy tactical transport aircraft powered by four turboprop engines, manufactured in the United States since the 1950s by the Lockheed company, now Lockheed Martin. It is a high-wing aircraft, with a free cargo compartment, integral rear loading ramp with or without roll, fully pressurized cargo hold that can be quickly adapted for passengers, stretchers or troop transport. Capable of takeoffs and landings on unprepared runways, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, cargo, and medical evacuation aircraft. However, its versatile structure has served a variety of additional functions, including close air support, air assault, search and rescue, scientific research support, meteorological reconnaissance, air refueling, maritime patrol and firefighting.
