Tetris (Russian: ??´????) is a puzzle video game originally designed and programmed by Alekséi Pázhitnov in the Soviet Union. It was launched on June 6, 1984, while working for the Dorodnitsyn Computing Center of the Soviet Union Academy of Sciences in Moscow, Russian SFSR.
The game derives its name from the Greek numerical prefix tetra- (all pieces in the game, known as Tetrominoes, containing four) and from Pázhitnov's favorite sport, tennis.
