Email predates the Internet, and in fact, for it to be created, it was a crucial tool. In a 1961 MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) demonstration, a system was exhibited that allowed multiple users to access an IBM 7094 from remote terminals, and thus save files to the disk. This made possible new ways to share information. Email began being used in 1965 on a time-sharing supercomputer, and by 1966 it had spread rapidly for use on computer networks.
