The UH-1 was long a symbol of United States involvement in Southeast Asia in general and Vietnam in particular, and as a result of that conflict became one of the most recognized helicopters in the world. In Vietnam the main missions carried out by the Huey included general support, air assault, cargo transport, medical evacuation, search and rescue, electronic warfare, and later, ground attack. During the conflict, the helicopter evolved significantly towards a longer version based on the Model 205. This version was initially designated as UH-1D and began flying in 1963.
